Reigning Champions round two! Tameside Open 2012

Sunday 1st April 2012

Rising like a phoenix from the ashes, Tyldesley Band are once again proud to announce retaining another contest title!

Undeterred by a disappointing result at the North West Regional Championships, the band once again took their performance of Goff Richards' "Cross Patonce" to the stage at Dukinfield Town Hall on Sunday 25th March, where adjudicator Gordon Higginbottom placed the band 1st out of 6 of the North West's most competitive 2nd Section bands.

The band are extremely pleased with the result, which marks a new record for the band, claiming 5 titles out of 7 contests entered over the last 12 months! The band are now more determined than ever to ensure that the success continues.

The next contest that the band are planning to enter will be Fleetwood Open in October 2012. The band would also like to thank Frank Hodges and the team at Lancashire Contests and Tameside Council for their continuous support of the event.

Reigning Champions! Brass at The Guild 2012

Wednesday 8th February 2012

Tyldesley Band - Brass at The Guild Reigning 2nd Section Champions 2012

With a fantastic start to 2012, Tyldesley Band are delighted to announce that we have retained the winning title at Brass at The Guild 2012!

Competing against 5 other 2nd section bands, who travelled from as far as Wales and Yorkshire, Tyldesley have managed to retain the winning title at the prestigious Guild Hall in Preston, and also the re-awarding of the Peter Harrison award for the best Bass section.

Adjudicated by Mike Kilroy, the band's performance of the late Goff Richards' "Cross Patonce" (the 2nd Section set work for the North West Regional Championships 2012) saw them being awarded the Brass at The Guild glass trophy and prize money of £1000 (increased this year due to the year of the Guild), with praising comments of the performance, soloists and choices of the Musical Director's (Rob Taylor) interpretation from Mr Kilroy.

The band would like to thank Derek Atkinson and the team at Lancashire Contests for a smooth running event, despite last minute heavy snow causing problems across the region.

Using the feedback from the adjudication, we are now working to add final touches to the set work for the North West Regional Championships on Sunday 26th February 2012 at the Opera House, Winter Gardens, Blackpool, where we will compete against 13 other bands to qualify for the National Brass Band Championship Finals later in the year.

Local to the area, Danny is a student at Pendleton College in Salford, and in addition to signing as our Kit player, is also a drummer/songwriter in rock band Albino Gorilla.

He first played with the band in July, though his first major concert with the band was at our very successful "Last Night of The Proms" concert in Pennington Park on Saturday 10th September, where the band entertained the audience with a wide selection of music, also featuring singer Chris Stacey.

New Signings

Tuesday 12th July 2011

Tyldesley Band welcomes two new cornet signings to the ranks!

Firstly, the band welcomes Charlotte Royle on back row. Charlotte, previously at Trinity Girls Band, has been helping the band out with a number of contests and events for the past several months has accepted a position on the back row to become a permanent of the band. Charlotte heralds from Wigan, and is currently studying for a Masters in Art and Design - she also has a degree in Photography and comes from a family of photographers along with her sister and father!

Secondly, the band welcomes Natalie Styles on the back row. After a short sabbatical from playing (you can't keep away from it all!) Natalie, originally from Whitehaven in Cumbria, joins Tyldesley from Rainford Band, and is currently studying at the University of Liverpool.

End of season update!

Tuesday 28th June 2011

As the current concert season nearly draws to a close, the band looks back on the events of the year, with its many successes and problems, and a preview of what's to come in the next season in September.

The season began very well in September 2010, where despite the varied weather conditions, the band performed at Pennington Hall Park for the annual "Proms in The Park" and continues to be a major success for the band and Wigan & Leisure Culture Trust (WLCT), and wet but well attended parade for the Wigan Borough Veterans' Council in Leigh.

Shortly after, however, in mid-October, the band was deeply shocked and saddened at the sudden death of Tyldesley Band Treasurer and Contest Secretary Pat Lummis. Pat, whose Bookmakers once sponsored the band (Classic Racing Tyldesley Band), had been involved with the band for more than 15 years and provided invaluable and immeasurable contributions to the band over the many years he was associated with the band. The band performed at his funeral in St George's Church in Tyldesley, which was packed out by all of Pat's friends and family who came to say farewell.

At about the same time, the band this year chose not to enter the Pontins Brass Band Championships at Prestatyn Sands, however a number of band members went down for the weekend as spectators and thoroughly enjoyed the event. The fate of the contest is still unknown as shortly after, Pontins was placed in administration, though a buyer was found for the majority of the company, including Prestatyn Sands.

Following this, the band performed at the Remembrance Sunday parade in Tyldesley, and the band's annual Poppy Concert at Formby Hall, which attracted many local supporters and once again proved successful for the band.

The band had a slightly quieter Christmas this year as the heavy snow and ice meant the band's annual Christmas Concert at Formby Hall was cancelled, though the smaller carolling events kept the band occupied during this time!

A mixed start to the year, however, brought many successes from February, where the band took the Second Section title at Brass at The Guild performing Kevin Norbury's "Variations on Maccabeus", and narrowly missed the qualifying positions at the North West Regional Championships at Winter Gardens in Blackpool, though placed on a strong result of 4th out of 16 bands performing the set work, Eric Ball's "Resurgam". Later, the band entered the Tameside Open Championships at Dukinfield Town Hall performing Variations on Maccabeus, and once again took the title! The band are extremely proud of these results and hope that our hard work and determination continues.

After a quiet April/May, with our annual performance at Culcheth Community Day. A week after the annual Whitsun March for Dukinfield Unitarians, where the band this year also performed the hymns for the joint service outside Dukinfield Town Hall, the band entered the Whit Friday, the "Greatest Free Show On Earth", for the first time in over a decade and gained some strong results and some prize money! The busiest weekend in the band's calendar saw us perform at Bag Lane Methodists' annual walking day, and our annual Summer Concert at Formby Hall, which again attracted a high attendance of supporters and the local community.

As the season draws to a close, the band are performing at Atherton Scout Hut on Saturday 9th July and a private wedding on Saturday 26th July. The year has been extremely busy for the band, with a mixture of happy and sad events. The band would like to thank all supporters who have attended our engagements, and we hope you have enjoyed our performances! As some band members moved onto pastures new, we welcomed several new players to the band, and had the continued support of our deps. We still have some vacancies, which can be found on the Vacancies page above.

The first concert of the new season will be "Last Night of The Proms" in Pennington Hall Park on Saturday 10th September - we hope to see you there!

Membership with the NWABBA

Tuesday 28th June 2011

Following the dissolution of the North West Counties Brass Band Association (NWCBBA), the band has made an application to become a member of the North West Area Brass Bands Association (NWABBA).

The NWCBBA was dissolved following an Emergency General Meeting. Special thanks must go to Derek Atkinson and Frank Hodges for their hard work over the last 25 years.

The running of contests that were previously supported by the NWCBBA such as Northern Open Championships in St Helens, Brass at The Guild and Tameside Open will continue to be run by Lancashire Contests.

Return to Whit Friday...

Tuesday 28th June 2011

After a break for more than a decade, Tyldesley Band took part in the Whit Friday march contests in Tameside and Saddleworth, where the band gained some very strong results!

In addition to taking to taking some of the top 15 places out of 50 bands, Tyldesley Band secured the best Second Section Band in Grotton (Saddleworth) with William Rimmer's "Ravenswood".

Band members thoroughly enjoyed the event, with the contests becoming more popular year-on-year, and are already making plans for next year's contests on Friday 1st June 2012.

Celebrating 75 years of service at the age of 85!

Friday 6th May 2011

Tyldesley Band - Long Service - Chairman Charlie Taylor

Long service has many different connotations in different organisations, however it would be more than fair to say that Tyldesley's own Charlie Taylor has completed one of the longest services to brass band in history!

Surrounded by friends, family and band members, on Sunday 17th April at Formby Hall, members of Tyldesley Band presented Charlie not just a birthday cake for his 85th birthday, but a special award for 75 years service to Tyldesley Band.
In addition, Charlie was presented with a Fairey (Geneva) tie by his grandson and associate conductor of Faireys, Mark Peacock, along with North West Counties Brass Band Association representative Derek Atkinson, who presented the award for long service, noting that only 2 other people had received this award for long service in the history of the association.

At the grand age of 85, chairman Charlie continues to support the band in an immeasurable number of ways, including as the band van driver, repairer, historian and general jack of all trades. He taught all 3 of his sons Brian, Rob and John to play, and taught many children across the area to play and encouraged them to join bands and continue the tradition - pictures of historical events such as these can be found in the image gallery.

Bad Weather Concert Cancellation

Saturday 18th December 2010

It is with great regret that the annual Formby Hall Christmas Concert has been cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
